Supernatural: Bone Key - New Novel

Order Supernatural: Bone Key

Tuesday, 26 August, the new Supernatural novel Supernatural: Bone Key hit store shelves. Be sure, we’ll pick up a copy and report back.

The new novel, by Keith R.A. DeCandido (Supernatural: Nevermore), sends Sam and Dean to Key West, Florida to hunt demons and ghosts in the tropics. The town has so many things going bump in the night that the primary industry is ghost tours. When a tour guide dies of an apparent heart attack, though, the Winchester boys come to town to investigate, and save the town. Then, as if ghosts of Key West’s most notorious-in-life residents, and demons bent on mischief, weren’t enough, some dark, ancient power seeks revenge. The whole island is in danger of utter destruction.

If it’s utter destruction, if must be Tuesday!

Have you picked up your copy yet? Leave a comment and let us know what you think of the book, so far.

August 25th, 2008 by jonathan | 2 Comments | Filed in Supernatural News

Thomas Kinkade’s Christmas Cottage comes out on DVD, 11 November 2008. Of course, it features our own Jared Padalecki as Thomas Kinkade, Marcia Gay Harden as his mother, and the inimitable Chris Elliott as the Cabin Boy. Just kidding.

Here is the previously released trailer for the film. It’s a sweet movie, but surely such sentiments aren’t lost on Supernatural fans.

The cast of 'The Watchmen' show for a press junket in San Diego at Comic-Con

While the boys appeared at Comic-Con to represent Supernatural, last month, their TV father, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, was busy with the rest of the cast of Watchmen. The film adaptation of the popular 80s comic series will hit theaters 6 March 2009, and follows current and retired superheros as they investigate the mysterious murder of one of their own. Set in an alternate Cold War era America, the film promises to do justice to the action from the comic series.

Supernatural Making the Cut Videos

August 21st, 2008 by jonathan | No Comments | Filed in Supernatural News

Okay. Thanks to missyjack, who commented on my post yesterday (Supernatural Making the Cut Winner), I have a huge correction to make. Promax actually announced the Making the Cut winners back in June. The winner was a video for Gossip Girl, submitted by Joe Kutilek of Iowa State University. A few Supernatural promos made it to the finals, though.

So, along with my huge mea culpa, as penance, I offer here a couple of the finalists, who submitted Supernatural videos.

August 20th, 2008 by jonathan | 4 Comments | Filed in Awards, Fans, Video Clip

NOTE: Yesterday, I got so excited, when I was preening the releases from the past week, that I totally messed this one up. It’s still good. After reading missyjack’s comment, I remember watching last year’s entries, and thinking how many of the non-winners I actually liked a lot. Alas. C’est la guerre, mes amis!

The votes are tallied for the 2008 [2007] Making the Cut contest. Students, video and film producers to be, sent in their entries for this contest to select the best Supernatural promotional video. After months of hard work by the contestants, and deliberation by the panel, the winner is…

Will Supernatural Demons Run Round the “Uncanny Valley”?

August 19th, 2008 by jonathan | 1 Comment | Filed in Special Effects

Supernatural has done an amazing job at special effects that don’t tread into the cheesy. Recently, series creator Eric Kripke stated that they learned their lesson in Wendigo. Anyone who’s seen The Six Million Dollar Man [in 2008, that's Bill Gate's lunch money] fight Bigfoot, or had to sit through a Power Rangers battle against a big rubber villain, knows that good special effects are no easy feat.

Even more challenging is the animation of realistic human faces. It’s a cliché in the CGI world that the more realistic human animation becomes, the less convincing it becomes. Supernatural, whose real charm is its human story uses makeup, and the largely unseen to do its evil bidding. Buffy and Angel of the also-very-human Whedonverse, relied heavily on a crack staff of makeup artists, as well. What if, though, they could create a world of evil, humanoid beasties that pushed the edge but didn’t cost an arm and a leg? What if a human actor could work the magic in front of a video camera, with no sensors pasted on the face, and have the computer generate a realistic demon, bigfoot, or wendigo?

Image-Metrics seems to have an answer to that question. It may be some time before the really good stuff becomes available –2020?- but its use in television and film, and, even more, in video games, could make for some incredible results!

Check out this demo of “Emily”. At the end, you’ll see the real actress, but the rest is all computer generated.

Impressive, eh?

Would this be useful technology for shows like Supernatural? Leave your comments, and let’s hear what you think!
